Adrian Joseph OBE and Alexander Sukharevsky insights from AI adoption webinar

The webinar “AI Adoption at Scale: Strategies for Business Leaders” featured insights from two leading experts on implementing AI transformation across enterprise-level businesses: Adrian Joseph OBE, Portfolio Board Member and AI Advisor, and Alexander Sukharevsky, McKinsey Senior Partner and Global Leader, QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey.

Here are the key takeaways from the webinar discussion:

1. There’s cautious optimism for AI adoption among the C-Suite

While 76% of CEOs see AI as an opportunity, 72% are investing with caution. The risk-averse nature of the corporate world makes the “all-in” approach challenging. Alexander Sukharevsky level-set expectations of success he’s currently seeing based on data, sharing that in the last two years since Chat-GPT came onto the scene, “essentially only less than 11% of use cases ever end up in production, meaning that only one out of 10 is real.”
As Alexander Sukharevsky noted when approaching AI strategy, “It’s all about conviction. You cannot select whether you focus on—data, architecture, or strategy. You actually need to execute across all elements, crossing your fingers that once you’re going through the pain and a few years of organizational disruption and fairly significant investment, it’s going to work.”

2. AI adoption needs a holistic approach

As Sukharevsky emphasized, “It’s not just about use cases. It’s about domain transformation.” Successful AI adoption requires comprehensively addressing data, architecture, strategy, talent, and governance.

“I think of AI as your own Formula One McLaren. It’s got mind-blowing performance and technical capability, but you need a skilled driver like Lando Norris, you need a skilled team at the factory in the pits, but you also need powerful brakes, you need lots of safety features built-in, and you need spectators helping think about how this sport develops.” – Adrian Joseph OBE.

3. Regulation & compliance can be an enabler, not a barrier

Joseph believes compliance can be an “enabler to speed” if approached proactively. He suggested, “Business leaders proactively engaging with regulators to understand how they’re thinking about the evolving landscape and the shape of the development of future regulations is really, really important.”

Adrian Joseph shared: “Getting the balance right between the guardrails that allow you to go faster and thinking about value and transformation, I think that’s one of the biggest things that CEOs and boards are fixated on at the minute.”

Sukharevsky called for a framework akin to Asimov’s “Principles of Robotics” to guide the responsible deployment of AI.

As he stated, “It’s extremely important that we give a lot of thought both for short-term implications and longer-term implications that frankly, I don’t believe one can regulate, but it’s rather the responsibility of all AI communities to think about what future we’re trying to shape.”

5. AI has the potential to unlock trillions in value – but data is key

McKinsey research estimates that generative AI alone could add $2.6 to $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy, dwarfing the UK’s GDP of $3.1 trillion in 2021. However, as both experts emphasized, this requires a holistic, long-term commitment to AI transformation across the organization.

Adrian Joseph also emphasized the value of high-quality data: “Getting comfortable with managing much larger datasets is going to be a thing of the future, but also getting comfortable with managing much smaller datasets that are messy, that are sparse. That’s something that we’re going to need to really get much more comfortable with… The importance of data can’t be misunderstood. It’s a foundational component of what we do.”

The webinar highlighted AI’s immense potential to transform businesses and the significant challenges in scaling AI adoption successfully. The key lies in a comprehensive, ethical, collaborative approach that balances innovation and responsibility.
